WTF?

It's a sad day for Derby as we begin to mourn the loss of a good effing pub.

As of today (3rd Sept) The Blue Dog, Sadler Gate, Derby has closed.

Those of you who frequent the Facebook highway, there is a group called 'blue dog anonymous', join it and voice your sorrow.

RIP Bluey, thanks for the sticky floors, interesting bogs and bringing more good jams and events than any park could have.

"Between the Covers"

The Inside Story, Sidewalk Magazine

When your scratching your head at the news agents pondering over which Skate mag to buy, there are two British mags that are worth their weight, and Sidewalk's one of them.
Starting in 1995, Sidewalk was founded by Jim Peskett (publisher), Wig Worland (photo editor), and Andrew Horsley - it emerged from the ashes of the once-proud Rad magazine. The 'inspiration' was to have a good,  grass roots UK skate mag to represent the UK scene.

The mag originally was called "Sidewalk Surfer", this was the earliest term for skateboarding, it was meant to relate to the history of the culture. The "Surfer" was dropped because it made cover design easier.

Recently the mag has noticed an emergence of more and more quality skate parks, thus more amazing skaters. Also more females skaters coming onto the scene.

It's not just the mag, Sidewalk has had a web presence for nearly a decade - footage, forums, etc. Go check it out and you will see!

"Getting Your Bearings"

An interview with the Sidewalk Skate Magazine Editor Ben Powel

Hooked: Firstly Ben, we here at Hooked appreciate you taking the time out to do this for us. Cheers
Right take a deep breath, here we go...

Hooked: How long have you been at Sidewalk?

12 years in total, 8 years as editor.

Hooked: Give us a quick run through of a day in the life of a Sidewalk Editor.

Wake up, check emails, check the forums, answer the phone 200 times, do some work, go out skating or filming. It varies from day to day.

Hooked: Do you have a favorite issue, if so, what was special about it?

Probably issue 100 - for many reasons - not least because we'd made it that far and it had tons of our friends in there, some of whom we hadn't seen or heard from for years. Oh, and the first one - for similar reasons.

Hooked: So those of you in issue 100, get in touch!!

Hooked: Do you have a favorite, park or venue that you enjoy visiting/filming, it could be anywhere in the world?

As long as there's a whippy 4ft or under mini ramp I'm happy. I would've said Carpetworld (OG spot near my house) but a bunch of smackheads OD'd there so the spot is now off-limits. Nice one scum bags....

Hooked: Do you skate yourself, if so how much do you skate these days and what stuff do you ride?

Cheeky bastard. How the hell could I do my job if I didn't skate? I skate all the time - when I'm not filming or working. I like mini ramps the most these days as I get older.

Hooked: Ha ha, nice one...What upsets you dude?

Pointless bickering and idiots trying to claim skateboarding as their own. Oh, and Ryan Sheckler obviously....ha ha

Hooked: Is there anyone you'd like to thank?

All the people who buy/contribute/appear in/etc the magazine. And Buddha.

Hooked: That was wicked dude, keep doin what your doin! thanks.

Banksy, Legend on the Streets!

Love him or hate him, you can't dispute the raw creativity of this shady character!
Born in Bristol England in 1974, he has become world renowned for his Graffiti Art.

His works have been hung on the walls of the rich and famous, people like Angelina Jolie spent £200.000 on one of his pieces.

This is one of Banksy first murals measuring 16ft x 7ft, it was on a block of flats that was demolished in 2006. A brick from the mural was sold on eBay for £500. For real!!

Rare mobile phone photo of Banksy.

His humorous views on the daily routine of life gives him the edge.

Park Review

Working The Ramps in Wirksworth

In a charming Derbyshire village, with birds tweeting, a calming sensation wafting from the cemetery next door and a serpentine like path slithering it's way to the skate park entrance , this rural setting for a session seems to wirk.

Grey weathered ply prevails, and after two years of the Dales climate to deal with, thanks to Free Style, there standing the test of time remarkably well.

The locals are friendly, with Paul Webster and Dave givin it some on the box. Also check out Local Jake's photography portfolio here.

Plus - some real shizzle by Josh 'Manhead' Young and Danny Beall

Well worth a wonder to Wirksworth for a weekend...ahh what??

Kill 34 minutes... Toy Machine 'Good & Evil'

This is one of my favourite skate videos ever. A perfect mix of witty tech niblets and hammers starring Ed T, Austin Stephens, Billy Marks, Josh Harmony and Jonny Layton...

Also, good news on the Toy front - Nick Trapasso has gone pro.

Spray..."Between the Lines"

From Sk8 to Graphic Design with Shepard Fairy

Those of you that are into Graffiti Art, or even those who aren't may have heard of Shepard Fairey, or at least seen his work.
He was born in 1970 in South Carolina, and at 14 yrs old started skateboarding and got heavily into the scene. His aim was to become a professional Skateboarder, but after a number of years the realisation that it wasn't going to happen dawned on him. He says"within skateboarding and punk-rock there was a lot of hand made art like stencils, stickers, drawings on t-shirts. It was a creative culture" so he decided to go to art school.

His emergence from a skateboarding culture has helped him mold a successful career as a graphic designer and illustrator, he now lives in Los Angeles and owns his own design agency Studio Number One.

A hybrid version of his original" Andre the Giant" that bought Shepard to the general public's notice.

Aim high and succeed!
